This winery, with ecological certification, is dedicated to developing traditional wines faithful to the spirit of Priorat.
Rocallós comes from recovered terraced vineyards in the Roques area, below the limestone and sandstone cliffs of Montalts, near La Vilella Alta. The vines were planted from 2000 onward on old dry-stone terraces. The site is surrounded by holm oak groves and olive trees, giving a distinct Priorat expression of rock, sun, and wild Mediterranean character.
Appellation: Priorat
Grape Varieties: 60% Carignan and 40% Grenache
Winemaking: Each variety is vinified separately in concrete tanks. Carinyena ages in oak barrels, while Garnacha ages in foudres for 16 months. After blending, the wine is refined in concrete for an additional 6 months.
Tasting Notes: “The 2023 Rocallos is 60% Carignan and 40% Grenache from the same parcel, planted in calcareous soils at the top of the rocky mountains where the vines reach unimaginable heights. Tannic and concentrated, this full-bodied wine is meaty and savory, more gourmand, sensual, feral, and powerful than the other single-vineyard wines in the lineup. The llicorella soils provide underling freshness and a hint of oxidation, as does the afternoon shading that cools the vines and preserves acidity.” From Jeb Dunnuck
Food Pairing: Beautiful with slow-braised lamb shank, grilled ribeye, duck breast with cherry sauce, mushroom risotto, and herb-roasted eggplant.
Ratings:
Vintage 2023: 95 Points Jeb Dunnuck
