Château Bouscassé

Madiran Château Bouscassé has been in Alain Brumont's family for many generations. Brumont is one of the most recognized winemakers in the world, a pioneer artist who draws inspiration from his terroir: great hillsides perched on limestone cliffs. Attentive to the environment, he lets the terroir express all its secrets, which is a key asset in enhancing Tannat, the iconic grape variety of the region.

Appellation: Madiran

Region: South West France

Grape Varieties: Tannat - Cabernet Sauvignon - Cabernet Franc

Vineyard: The terroir consists of a collection of plots of fine yellow and white clays on a layer of fissured limestone. This area represents Madiran's former elegance, charm, and voluptuousness, reminiscent of its 18th-century glory when it "rubbed shoulders" with France's greatest wines and reigned supreme over the rich cuisine of the Southwest. The vines are grown following sustainable methods and are at least 20 years old, with some approaching 100 years of age.

Winemaking: Depending on the vintage, maceration and fermentation can last for 3 to 6 weeks. The wine is then aged on lees in oak barrels, with 30% to 50% new oak. The winemakers are Alain Brumont and his stepson Antoine Veiry.

Tasting Notes: This powerful yet elegant wine is subtle and well-structured, with delicate fruit aromas such as blackberries melded with soft tannins. It stays young for a long time, evolving very slowly, and has great aging potential.

Food Pairing: This wine pairs delightfully with red meat, turkey, and duck. It also complements spicy dishes such as Indian or Asian cuisine.

Vintage 2020: 94/100 Wine Enthusiast Editor’s Choice, 93/100 James Suckling, 91/100 Vinous

"Aged for three years in a mix of small, large and older barrels, the wine is impressive. Smoky licorice aromas and powerful tannins show the concentration of the wine. Blending mainly Tannat with the two Cabernets, the wine is full of black-plum flavors, laced with still-young acidity. Drink from 2026." — Roger Voss

"Driven yet elegant, showing currants, spiced cherries, bark and warm spices on the nose, following through to a medium body with fine, firm tannins. Focused, structured and refined, offering velvety texture and a long, subtle finish. Tannat, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. Drink or hold." - James Suckling

"Initially marked by a hint of reduction, the 2020 gradually reveals blackberry, cedar, blackcurrant leaf and clove. Medium- to full-bodied and very well structured, the savoury and concentrated 2020 will benefit from a couple more years in a cool cellar to reach its full expression." - By Nicolas Greinacher on June 2025

Vintage 2019: 93+/100 Wine Advocate, 94/100 Wine Enthusiast Editor’s Choice, 90/100 Vinous

"The 2019 Château Bouscassé, a blend of 70% Tannat. 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon picked at the same time and co-fermented, possesses a perfumed, fresh bouquet of dark wild berries, spices, flowers and mulberries. Medium to full-bodied, polished and fleshy, it's layered and enveloping with a charming, seamless profile for a Madiran that segues into powdery tannins and a long, mineral finish. It demands some patience." Yohan Castaing

"This wine, blending Tannat and the two Cabernets, comes from one of the premium Madiran vineyards. It is, of course, young, its dark chocolate aroma and rich, dense black fruits showing a wine with a fine future. Drink this impressive Alain Brumont wine from 2026." - Roger Voss for The Wine Enthusiast (Published 12/31/2024).

"The 2019 Château Bouscassé delivers ripe black fruits alongside wood smoke, cloves and licorice. Leafy gradations can be traced back to the addition of Cabernet Franc. Polished tannins lend a gentle structure to this medium-bodied red that’s easygoing and savory. The 2019 spent the first year in barriques (30% new) followed by two years in 80-hectoliter foudres." Nicolas Greinacher
