Casa Agrícola Pepe Mendoza - El Veneno

$0.00

A serious expression of Monastrell with notes of lavender, rockrose, scrub, holm oak, and Mediterranean pines. The winery has a unique history of a beautiful mountain plot named after an ill-tempered past owner.

Appellation: D.O. Alicante

Grape Variety: 100% Monastrell

Winemaking: Manual handling, native yeast fermentation, and 12 months in a mix of French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: Magnificent mouthfeel, long and balanced with character for a wine to be aged.

Food Pairing: Iberian sausages, sheep cheeses, meat grills, lamb chops, long matured beef meats

Ratings:

2020 Vintage: 95+ Points Wine Advocate

The depth of the nose of the 2020 El Veneno already talks about a much better vintage with very complete and full wines that are floral, expressive and ripe but delicate, what they always look for: delicate wines with power, the proverbial iron fist in the velvet glove. It's varietal, Mediterranean, fresh, expressive, rich and complex, with abundant, chalky tannins that coat your mouth and give it a dry sensation, earthy and mineral. It has more of everything. The finest vintage of El Veneno to date. 9,900 bottles were filled in February 2022.Luis Gutiérrez

2024 Vintage: 95 Points Wine Advocate

The pure Monastrell 2024 El Veneno was produced with grapes from 45-year-old vines on sandy limestone soils. It fermented with 30% full clusters and matured in used 500-liter French oak barrels for one year. It is serious and a little shy and took time to develop in the glass. Even though the nose is subtle, there are slowly unfurling notes of Mediterranean herbs, thyme and rosemary, and berries and spices. It has length and width, with a fine thread, textured, caressing and balanced, developing notes of pine needles and Mediterranean forest, with a faint earthy touch. It has contained ripeness and 13.5% alcohol with 6.5 grams of acidity and is juicy and round, peachy and velvety, with Mediterranean notes of aromatic herbs. 12,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2025. It is again at the level of the 2021, the last vintage released of this wine.Luis Gutiérrez
